Our Vision

Our vision is to redefine our current theory of systems and begin developing a new emerging system, a system that operates through co-operation, integrity, beauty, and loving kindness. One that creates the conditions for all of Portland residences to achieve their greatest potential regardless of age, sexual orientation, color or disability. These conditions provide access to mental health, wellness, jobs, fresh food, and housing.Your text goes here

Our Approach

We create healthy and sustainable communities by mentoring houseless people in pursuit of self-sufficiency through our urban farm job training program. Participants in our three-month program receive technical training in growing food, nutrition education, career coaching, and other leadership development opportunities.

Ultimately, we believe every neighborhood should have a system that thrives: food + jobs = Economic justice for all!

Hi my name’s Daniel, when I was younger I made some bad choices that had a huge impact on my life so I finally started my life over and a few years ago I met this amazing guy named Chad Bliss after awhile Chad asked me to become apart of Food by design as a participant, then I was asked to come back and be a Work Crew Leader so I had that job role for some time and then was offered a position as one of Food by Design’s outstanding Board members.  And that is my current role today as Vice Chairman of Food by design. This is an absolutely amazing non-profit to be apart of, and has helped me become a more caring and positive person all together. Thanks for taking the time to read my story. 

 
Before the Kenton Womens Village, life was pretty lonely and hard for me. Ive been through alot in my life, alot of it, not very pretty. Since being at the women’s village, it has allowed me to gain the support I needed to better my life and to connect with people. then I met Food by Design. FbD helped me to ground myself, to connect deeper with that small voice inside that tells me everything is going to be okay. FbyD helped give me purpose and meaning. I really look forward to being even more involved in Food by Design’s work.

 

 

This urban farm training site began as a parking lot. And now…the crops: lettuce, radishes, spinach, peas, carrots and beets and kale.
